History

Since its establishment in 1957, the Faculty of Journalism and Media Studies of the Ghana Institute of Journalism has grown significantly and distinguished itself as a forceful and credible leader in journalism training. The untold success of the Faculty, its efforts and contribution to national development can be seen, felt and experienced through the exploits of its numerous alumni. Only the sun covers Ghana more than our trained journalists.

Built on GIJ’s core values of commitment to excellence, linking theory to practice and ensuring accountability with integrity, the Faculty of Journalism and Media Studies has become the standard-bearer for quality journalism training and media research in Ghana and sub-Saharan Africa.

The primary focus of the Faculty is to provide a conducive learning environment to equip students with sound education and the competence essential for the emerging media landscape. We seek to produce world-class journalists and media practitioners to serve the needs of industry and society.

The vision of the Faculty is to be the nucleus of journalism training in Africa, uphold higher academic standards and produce distinguished professionals to transform society.

The Faculty boasts of academic staff with indispensable expertise and qualification to impart knowledge and teach array of courses, leading to the attainment of a variety of certification: Diploma in Communication, Bachelor of Arts in Communication (Journalism), Master of Arts in Media Management and Master of Arts in Journalism. It also relies on adjunct lecturers, most of whom have distinguished themselves in journalism and media practice.

The Faculty is also in the process of developing new courses with industry experts to train more journalists in some specialties.
