Administration of the DRID
The Directorate is headed by a Director, who reports to the Deputy Rector. The Director is assisted by other operation levels Coordinators who attend to the day-to-day operations of the various units as displayed in the organogram below:
The primary functions of the DRID are:
- Liaise between the University and various research committees.
- Scout and review sources of funding.
- Establish a database of funding partners, research collaborators and their interests.
- Conduct periodic research needs assessments.
- Organise periodic research capacity building workshops for staff.
- Monitor staff research activities.
- Monitor the University Research Policy.
- Advise on legal and ethical issues relating to research.
Vision
To establish GIJ as a “world class research-focused university” through the cultivation of the spirit of innovation and creativity among Faculty, Staff and Students.
Mission
To promote, coordinate and facilitate research activities in the Institute; and increase over the next decade lead the development of the Institutes research strategic plans, including business plan and fund-raising strategies which can facilitate research activities in the Institute.
Objectives of DRID

- To develop and co-ordinate the Institute’s research agenda.
- To ensure through collaboration with stakeholders that research is of the highest quality.
- To ensure institutional commitment to uphold the highest ethical standards for the conduct of research.
- To implement the Institutes approach to research consistent with international guidelines
- To source, co-ordinate and manage funding for research.
- To coordinate all seminars, workshops and conferences of the Institute based on the research agenda.
- To coordinate and facilitate the publication of journals and books within the Institute.
DRID Units
The operations are DRID focussed in its four (4) units which are headed by coordinators. The activities and functions of the various units are outlined below:
Publications and Research Dissemination Unit
The Publications and Research Dissemination Unit is headed by a Coordinator, who leads with the following duties:
Working as Editorial Board for the University.
- Co-ordinating peer-review of manuscripts before publication.
- Coordinating research groups and proving the needed support such as research resources.
- Providing support for journal selection and publication-related activities.
- Requesting for annual research reports from Faculties, Departments, Sections and Units.
- Co-ordinating publication of research outcomes.
- Negotiating research collaboration with allied academic institutions and industry, and allocating such to the qualified staff.
- Recommending research procedures and regulations to departments.
- Submitting regular reports on their activities to the Director of the DRID.
Conferences, Workshops and Seminars Unit
The Conferences, Workshops and Seminars Unit is headed by a coordinator, who leads with the following duties:
- Liaising with the DRID to organise research skills capacity-building workshops, seminars and conferences for staff.
- Identifying priority areas of current national and international interests, including current issues and problems, for research by the University and organising workshops and conferences in such areas.
- Conducting periodic staff research needs assessment.
- Monitoring staff research activities.
- Submitting regular reports on their activities to the Director of the DRID.
Funding, Grants and Scholarships Unit
The Coordinator of the Funding, Grants and Scholarships Unit leads with the following duties:
- Scouting for and negotiating grants and contracts for research on behalf of the Institute.
- Establishing a database system of funders, researchers and their interests.
- Receiving, studying applications and recommending to Management for the granting of scholarships, awards and grants to staff and students where deserving.
- Conducting grant-writing workshops.
- Reviewing proposals prior to submission for scholarships, awards and grants.
- Assisting in the design and writing of grand-sourcing and research proposals.
- Submitting regular reports on their activities to the Director of the DRID.
Ethics and research performance Unit and Research Performance
The Ethics and research performance Unit is headed by a Co-ordinator, who sees to the maintenance of good research practices by all staff and students, being mindful of the ethical implications for researchers and other related activities. The unit:
- Serves as the University Research Ethics Committee.
- Prepares appropriate forms for ethical approval of research proposals.
- Assesses applications and grant ethical clearance, to staff, students and external researchers who propose to use the University or its staff and students or other study population for research.
- Approves research proposals that meet the University, national and international codes of ethics for researchers.
- Monitors approved proposals to ensure compliance with the guiding ethical standards.
- Ensures that humans involved in research are treated with dignity, and that their well-being is not compromised.
- Determines and controls the terms and conditions of research or other activities conducted in the University for which payments are made by outside bodies.
- In instances of alleged or suspected breach of ethics, the Ethics and research performance unit investigates the misconduct and recommends appropriate sanctions to the DRID.
- Monitors the Institute’s research policy and ensures that staff of the institute meet research deadlines.
- Shall on a regular basis report to the Director of the DRID on their activities.
- Through the Coordinator submits regular reports on its activities to the Director of the DRID
