Senior Lecturer
Mr. Yaw Odame Gyau is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Public Relations, Advertising and Marketing at Ghana Institute of Journalism.
He holds an MPhil Education degree from Open University, Malaysia, and currently a PHD Candidate at the same university. He also holds a Master of Arts degree in Advertising from the University College Kensington, London, a Diploma Certificate in Social & Citizen Media in Journalism from MKFC Stockholm College, Sweden. He also holds a BA in Graphic Design from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology, Kumasi, Ghana.
He is currently a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of PR, Advertising and Marketing, having lectured for over 13 years and was formerly the Head of Advertising department for two successive terms. He is an Instructor and facilitator at the IPR Ghana professional development department. He has also worked with other tertiary institutions such as Christian Service University College, Kumasi and Islamic University College, Accra. Prior to joining GIJ, he was an assistant lecturer and Special Education Needs (SEN) tutor at Barking College, Romford, London. In the printing and advertising industry he worked with Camelot Ghana Limited, and Greenflow agency, Accra.
His active participation and contribution to International and local conferences and workshops are detailed as follows; The International conference on Managing Large Classes, UCC (2010). He is the Executive Director of Stylo Consult, an Advertising Consultancy in Accra. He had been the Creative Director for a number of Social intervention projects such as IEC Projects for Waste management, Judicial Service Literacy project and Malaria Control for Research Triangle Institute and USAID.
With regard to academic associations, Mr. Gyau is a member of the Ghana Association of Writers (GAW), American Academy of Advertising (AAA), the World Advertising Research Centre (WARC)-United Kingdom and the Association of Educational and Instructional Technologists, Ghana (AEITG).
He has over 16 years’ experience in education, advertising and graphic design. He had been the technical adviser and designer of the JOCMAS (a peer reviewed academic journal of the Ghana Institute of Journalism) and has also published in the same journal, alongside other online publications. He is the author and designer of the textbook INSIDE GRAPHIC DESIGN (Contemporary edition): published for SHS visual art students across Ghana. He is currently the Founder and online Instructor of ELAD (E-learning and Advertising education website- www.elad.styloconsult.com) and ELEARNITY SEMINARS to facilitate the integration of Instructional Technology into teaching and learning of communication courses.
His contribution to community work and National development as an academic, spans from 2010 when he has served on several committees advocating for policy, infrastructure and curriculum development. Notable among them is his valuable role in the Curriculum development of the new curriculum for the Postgraduate programmes (for accreditation by NAB) introduced by GIJ to kickstart the SoGSaR in 2014. Secondly, he has been a strong advocate and championed the need for Integration of e-leaning into curriculum of communication universities and this is illustrated in his role as chairman of the Distance Education Programme (DEP) Committee. Most recently, he is a member of the Committee for Online Teaching and Learning and the GIJ MOODLE Functionality committee, mandated to establish the modalities for the invention of a maiden MOODLE Interface for the instruction and conduct of online examinations for the 2019/2020 academic year, which has been largely successful.
In November, 2005, having volunteered as a tutor in six secondary schools in East-London, under the NEWHAM EDUCATION BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP, he was awarded The Best Volunteer Teacher award in the NEWHAM BOROUGH in a Special Honorary ceremony at the Buckingham Palace in a reception with the Queen of England.
In spite of all his career credentials, he is also a Lay Pastor of the Lighthouse Chapel International and oversees the Pokuase-Ablekuma circuit area.
