A total of 1,390 undergraduate and postgraduate freshmen and women of the Ghana Institute of Journalism have been matriculated to mark their formal admission into the school.
Addressing the matriculants on Friday, 18th March, 2022 at the North Dzorwulu Campus, the Rector, Prof. Kwamena Kwansah-Aidoo congratulated the matriculants on their successful admission and welcomed them into the university community. “This is the beginning of a journey that should open new scenes and lead to better opportunities in the lives of those who have successfully competed against thousands of others for a chance to get access to higher education” he said.
Developmental plans
Briefing the students on developmental plans, Prof. Kwansah-Aidoo mentioned that plans were underway to develop the campus into a fully-fledged ultramodern university campus.
“On our own, we are seeking to partner private investors to build hostel facilities and a lecture hall complex. We also plan to construct a Digital Media Hub that will be the technological heartbeat of the Institute and the training ground for the 21st Century fully equipped and well-rounded digital graduate and the global citizen that we want to train our students to become.”
Admission statistics
The Rector disclosed that at the end of admission process for the 2021/2022 Academic Year, 1,180 undergraduate students enrolled, with the following breakdown:
- Diploma in Communication Studies – 400
- BA Communication Studies Degree (Level 100) – 402
- BA Communication Studies Degree (Top-up) – 378
He said the School of Graduate Studies and Research admitted 210 graduate students for its four graduate programmes with the following breakdown:
- MA Journalism – 5
- MA Media Management – 6
- MA Public Relations – 97
- MA Development Communication – 102
Merger
Prof. Kwansah-Aidoo stated that the bill merging the Ghana Institute of Journalism, Ghana Institute of Languages and the National Film and Television Institute into one university has received presidential assent. He stated however that, government will, in the coming days, constitute the Governing Council which will see to the smooth running of the newly birthed university.
Charge to students
The Rector praised freshmen and women for their hard work and perseverance which helped them gain admission to the greatest communication training university in West Africa. He encouraged them to work hard to build a solid academic community. “I want to appeal to you to make a conscious effort to be part of the process of building a community of people who love each other, support each other, work together and, above all, stay away from, and protect each other against patterns of behaviour and social practices that are not consistent with Ghanaian values.”
He admonished matriculants to prioritize honesty and truth in their academic pursuits. “Kindly note that, cheating to achieve your goals goes completely against that culture. I say this at this very early stage, so that you are aware that dishonest behaviour such as plagiarism (taking other people’s work and trying to pass it off as your own) and cheating in examinations is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” he added.
