Overview
Quality assurance in higher education includes all policies, measures, planned processes and actions through which the quality of higher education is maintained and developed. Quality of higher education can be described as the degree to which the education meets the client’s needs and demands. In this respect higher education has two different clients: students and society.
The Institutional Quality Assurance Unit seeks to heighten the level of clarity and focus on institutional functioning towards quality enhancement; facilitate the acculturation of quality within the institution through the institutionalization of good practice; provide sound basis for decision-making; act as a dynamic system for quality changes in the institution and make the institution and its graduates globally competitive in programme and institutional rankings, in attracting prospective students and collaborators to the institution and in graduate placement on the job market.
History
The Quality Assurance Unit was established in 2014 as mandated by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission. The role of the unit is to appropriate quality culture needed to make the institution globally competitive.
The unit rolled out a series of training programmes for the staff to:
- Build the quality culture of the institute
- Inculcate the importance and the role of the unit
- Explain the effect of the unit’s performance on the institute
Some functions of the unit are as follows:
- Facilitate internal capacity building for faculty and academic support staff
- To continually improve the overall quality of service of the institute
- Oversee the institutions accreditation process and other quality related engagements with Ghana Tertiary Education Commission.
- Facilitate the collation and integration of feedback from students and other stakeholders on quality related issues in the institution

To employ effective quality assurance and quality improvement policies and practices to make easier the creation of an enabling environment that makes the Ghana Institute of Journalism increasingly important to national and global communication development through effective research and high-quality teaching and learning.
